How is noise harmful to health?
Excessive noise can contribute and increase the risk of tinnitus, deafness and damage to speech frequencies, impacting communication with others. It is estimated 1 in 30 people have an increased risk of noise associated complications.
Work related hearing damage and loss is preventable but is an irreversible condition.
Noise is a hazard in many businesses, such as manufacturing, heavy industries and transport. It is imperative that employees who are exposed to sources of noise, through processes, machinery or equipment are regularly tested to ensure their hearing is adequately protected.
What is noise Surveillance?
You must provide hearing checks to all employees regularly exposed to high or combined noise. The frequency may increase for employees who have underlying conditions, new starters or apprentices which increase their risk of damage.
Audiometry aims to;
- Detect early signs of hearing damage
- Prevent additional damage to hearing
- Provide reassurance that PPE is satisfactory
