Health Surveillance

Health surveillance involves a variety of checks over an extended period of time, to “watch over” and ensure there is no short or long term health effects from the workplace hazards. Health surveillance, or occupational health screening is a legal requirement for any employees who are exposed to noise, vibration, chemicals, fumes, solvents or hazardous substances. The prime purpose of occupational health is prevention.

Health surveillance should only be performed, following workplace risk assessments.

Occupational Health surveillance objectives

  • To protect the employees from long term and acute occupational related illness and disability.
  • To identify changes in the workplace and identify trends.
  • To provide reassurance that control measure are sufficient.

When is health surveillance required?

  • Is there a risk to health from the workplace activities?
  • Is it safe to control the risk internally, or is specialist occupational health advice required?
  • Is there a legal requirement around the industry or workplace processes?

Health surveillance checks are performed to evidence the control measures which have been put into place to reduce risk are working effectively.

If current measures you have implemented aren’t working, health surveillance can identify the health issues and we can help you put together a more comprehensive health surveillance policy, where we can help you to implement measures are effective.
